PHILIP GLASS (*1937)
In the Penal Colony (2000) Chamber opera based on the short story In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka

JEWISH
“What do I have in common with Jews? I hardly have anything in common with myself.” – Franz Kafka is one of the most famous Jewish artists in the world; his relationship to Judaism was complicated throughout his life. On the 100th anniversary of his death, JCOM is presenting Philip Glass's chamber opera based on Kafka's famous story In the Penal Colonyonto the stage, which is about a debate about a new method of execution in which the unsuspecting condemned are made to experience their crime firsthand until death.

TODAY
In the Penal Colony was created in 1914 as a reaction to a world in which violence and crimes against humanity have become frighteningly commonplace - an issue that is as relevant today as it was then. Glass's 2000 setting underlines the timelessness of the piece about the limits of justice and what is humanly possible.

FOR ALL
Director Martin Valdés-Stauber's production leaves plenty of space for the actors and the text: in an almost empty room, he translates Philip Glass' 'Minimal Music' into exemplary movements and gestures. The audience's imagination is in demand.
